چکیده

INDIAN PEDIATRICS 519 VOLUME 45_JUNE 17, 2008 I read with great interest the recent editorial “Improving Status of Neonatal Health in India”(1). We know from SEARCH trial (Gadchiroli), and from the example of Sri Lanka that investments in Level I and II care can bring significant reductions in neonatal mortality(1). We, however, rarely discuss overcoming negative parental attitudes in a large section of vulnerable communities like rural areas, urban slums in India, which can attribute significantly to neonatal mortality. Negative parental attitudes like gender bias, not seeking timely care for their sick newborns, not following medical advice in the presence of freely available services could arise from a feeling of helplessness due to poverty, social taboos and pre-fixed mindset(2,3).

Survival of Extremely Preterm Neonates in a Resource-limited Setting

Background: Preterm birth is a major contributor to neonatal and under-five mortality, and births at lower gestational ages (GA) contribute more to these statistics. Most developed countries have succeeded in improving survival at extremes of GA, while most developing countries like Nigeria still lag behind. The objective of this retrospective study was to document the...

Maternal and Neonatal Directed Assessment of Technologies (MANDATE): Methods and Assumptions for a Predictive Model for Maternal, Fetal, and Neonatal Mortality Interventions

Maternal, fetal, and neonatal mortality disproportionately impact low- and middle-income countries, and many current interventions that can save lives are often not available nor appropriate for these settings. Maternal and Neonatal Directed Assessment of Technologies (MANDATE) is a mathematical model designed to evaluate which interventions have the greatest potential to save maternal, fetal, ...

Eosinopenia and Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio as diagnostic tools in neonatal early onset sepsis -a single center observational study

Background and Objective: Neonatal sepsis is associated with high mortality and has a favourable outcome when recognized and treated in a timely manner. In resource-limited settings, there is a need for an affordable test with a short turnaround time for timely diagnosis of sepsis. The aim of this study was to find out the role of eosinopenia and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in screenin...

Management of newborn infections in primary care settings: a review of the evidence and implications for policy?

BACKGROUND Long-term, sustainable programs to address high incidence and death rates from neonatal infections are required for improving child survival. There is an urgent need to define the role of community-based management for neonates with serious bacterial infections--both at home and at first-level facilities. METHODS We reviewed available evidence for community-based antibiotic managem...

Neonatal mortality in India.

Neonatal health care is concerned with the condition of the newborn from birth to 4 weeks (28 days) of age. Neonatal survival is a very sensitive indicator of population growth and socio-economic development. The survival rate of female infants correlates to subsequent population replacement. For these reasons, the issue of neonatal deaths is a serious national health concern, especially in dev...
